Designed to Intertwine
by Sofia Leyba
We are not separate from nature, and we should not be afraid to relish the sensation of being engulfed by it. This piece is a body extension sculpture that extends down the back in an organic shape resembling a nervous system, calling towards the wearers physical and mental connection with the space they inhabit. By wearing this soft and malleable art made of wool and exploring a vegetation rich setting, the user will collect seed and debris in the fiber of the fabric and disperse these items elsewhere, creating beautiful change. The seeds will grow, and the wearer will feel the many benefits of being an active participant in nature.
My goal is to encourage humans to have a positive impact on our environments by immersing our physical forms and minds into interacting with the life that is around us, which will sooth the mind and challenge the narrative that humans are separate from nature. We are animals, and just like animals, we have the ability to shape outdoor spaces in ways that are productive and gentle.
